Payment of Rates

Late Payments

In accordance with the Local Government Act, a penalty (fine) of 2% is applied on any payment for rates that is received after the due dates.

A further penalty at the prescribed interest rate is added to any unpaid rates each month after they continue to be unpaid.

Failure to Pay

If rates remain unpaid for 30 days or more after the due date, the debt is referred to Council’s debt collection agency. Referral to Council’s debt collection agency will incur additional costs to you which will automatically be applied to your account.

To avoid referral to Council’s debt collection agency, please contact us as soon as possible if you are unable to pay by the due date. We can offer flexible payment arrangements to those experiencing financial difficulty or financial hardship. These enquiries are always treated with the highest confidentiality.

For further information on Hardship please view Council’s Financial Hardship Policy

Sale of Land for Failure to Pay

In accordance with Section 184 of the Local Government Act, a Council can sell a property for unpaid rates when the rates have been in arrears for three years or more.

This action is a last resort, but one that will be taken by Council if necessary.
