Overview

Renmark Paringa Council began a community consultation in 2022 for the ‘Paringa Place Plan’ with the aim to beautify and upgrade the main street in Paringa. The intent of this project is to be delivered in a staged approach with consultation and concept design occurring in the first year and implementation to be carried out in future years.

The aim of transforming the Paringa town centre – with the proposed works as set out below – is to create major economic and social benefits to the surrounding businesses and the Paringa Community.

Stage 1 of the project has included a two-part consultation process. Council consulted with businesses/community in April to review the Paringa main street area for upgrades, new additions/alterations etc. to beautify the area. This involved a survey being created to enable community to provide their feedback and ideas about the proposed beautification of the area.

Feedback identified that the community would like to see the following projects occur in this priority order:

  1. Upgraded public toilets, signage and access (project 8).
  2. A new nature play space (project 9) and Improved BBQ, seating and picnic facilities that are sheltered (project 4) – these 2 projects tied equally in 2nd place.
  3. More signage, including a large gateway sign and historic interpretation signage (project 1).
  4. Safer and better connected footpaths (project 3).
  5. New landscape spaces and more trees, including hedging (project 5).
  6. More lighting including feature lighting (project 6).
  7. A new trail head for cycling and walking (project 2).
  8. Areas for community gathering (project 7).
  9. Art Opportunities (project 10).

Project status

Following the tendering process carried out August 2023, award-winning landscapers LCS Landscapes were awarded the works of both Paringa Town Centre Revitalisation and 180 Murray Avenue Open Space Redevelopment. LCS have previously worked with Council on the Taylor Riverfront Precinct which they won the ALIA SA Landscape Architecture Awards, SA Regional Achievement Parks and Open Space. Council are excited to see the Paringa Town Centre Revitalisation come together in 2024.

Timeline

LCS and Council are currently working towards the final design stages of this exciting project and plan to undertake further community engagement with the prior participants of the Paringa Place Plan community consultation. Construction is estimated to begin mid 2024 a few weeks after 180 Murray Avenue Redevelopment works concluding. This project is not planned to go back out to the tendering process in 2025 to complete the remaining works of this concept.

Long term outcomes

The Riverland region is best known for its serene views and adding open space allows for of the community and tourists to utilise these popular areas and with intent to bring further business to the Paringa Township.
