Revised design endorsed for Renmark Lions Playground

A revised concept for the Renmark Lions Playground, has been endorsed by Renmark Paringa Council Elected Members, paving the way for the redevelopment to progress to detailed design and construction.

The revised concept retains the existing shade structure within the Lions playground, while incorporating larger play equipment and improved accessibility across the site.

A report on the playground redevelopment, including the outcomes of community consultation, was presented to Elected Members earlier this year.

Following questions about elements of the proposed design, Elected Members laid the matter on the table to allow further consideration and discussion at a briefing session.

Staff subsequently investigated options to retain the existing shade structure while still delivering an improved, inclusive and engaging play space for the community.

As the existing structure limits the type and size of equipment that can be installed directly underneath it, larger play equipment has been positioned outside the structure’s footprint.

This allows the shade structure to be retained while providing a broader range of play opportunities.

The revised concept also includes additional rubber softfall across the playground area, improving accessibility and supporting a more inclusive play environment.

The redevelopment will renew playground infrastructure that is nearing the end of its asset life, while providing an opportunity to improve accessibility and deliver a broader range of play experiences for children.

The existing playground has served the community for many years, and its renewal will ensure the space can continue to meet the needs of local families and visitors into the future.

Renmark Paringa Mayor Peter Hunter said the revised concept reflected both the strong community interest in the project and the additional consideration given to the design by Elected Members.

“We had a very good response to the initial community consultation, with some 64 submissions, showing us just how important this playground is to local families and the wider community,” Mayor Hunter said.

“Elected Members wanted to make sure we had properly considered the options available, particularly whether the existing shade structure could be retained while still achieving the outcomes we want from the redevelopment.

“The revised concept gives us a good balance. We can retain the existing structure while providing new and improved equipment, better accessibility and a play space that will cater for a broader range of children.

“Community spaces like this are incredibly important, and it is worth taking the time to make sure we get them right.”

Feedback received through the initial community consultation included a desire for larger play items and opportunities for older children. These have been incorporated into the revised concept where possible, with larger equipment included to broaden the range of play experiences available within the playground.

The Renmark Lions Playground is primarily designed to cater for children aged 0–10. Future upgrades at Darnley Taylor Park have been identified as an opportunity to provide more challenging play elements specifically aimed at older children.

The project will now progress to detailed design, with construction expected to commence in early 2027.

Further updates will be provided as the project progresses.
