Renmark Paringa Council statement – Schmidt Reserve

Published 12th January 2026

Council wishes to address concerns surrounding community use of a parcel of land known as Schmidt Reserve, located at Schmidt Drive Paringa.

Following a recent review of land use and applicable laws at this location, some additional compliance action has been necessary to ensure that use of the land is compliant with by-laws resolved by the Renmark Paringa Council.

This has resulted in seven houseboat owners that were moored at the location being advised that mooring at the site was not permitted.

Additionally, signage has been installed to proactively inform the community of relevant land use laws that apply.

It is important to note that these are not new or additional laws. Rather, Council is drawing the community’s attention to existing requirements to ensure recreational use of the land is undertaken appropriately, considering its status as part of the Riverland Ramsar listed wetland.

Land dedication and conditions of transfer

In 1991, the land was transferred by the Schmidt family and formally dedicated as a Recreation Reserve, with care, control and management vested in Council. The land was set aside for public recreational purposes, with the clear intent that it remain largely in its natural condition and available for shared community enjoyment rather than exclusive or intensive use.

The site also forms part of a Ramsar Convention–listed wetland, which places additional obligations on Council to avoid disturbance, limit intervention, and protect the area’s environmental values.

Council’s role is therefore one of custodianship rather than development. Management of the site currently focuses on minimal maintenance and monitoring, while preventing uses that would alter the natural state of the land, restrict broader community access, or conflict with its recreational and environmental purpose.

The documentation can be viewed here.

Online feedback

Late last week, Council became aware of some views on this action being shared on social media platforms.

Council understands the interest and passion surrounding this matter from the houseboat community and acknowledges the importance of supporting the houseboat industry.

However, Council also encourages people raising concerns to do so respectfully.

Personal attacks towards elected members, staff and residents aren’t conducive to positive outcomes and solutions.

Council encourages using official channels to lodge matters so they can be addressed in an appropriate and professional matter.
