New infrastructure proves its worth during Katarapko fire response

Published 16th February 2026

Recently installed emergency response infrastructure at the Renmark Aerodrome played a critical role during bushfire operations in late January.

On 29 and 30 January, the newly constructed Water and Fuel Reloading Base, delivered by Renmark Paringa Council in partnership with the Country Fire Service (CFS), was put to the test when multiple fires ignited within Katarapko National Park.

Throughout the incident, the facility was utilised as a dedicated refuelling base by both the CFS and South Australia Police (SAPOL), supporting aerial firefighting operations, crew and equipment transport, and aerial surveillance during the response.

The aerodrome became a hive of activity, with multiple Black Hawk helicopters, CFS Cessna Caravans, and a SAPOL Cessna Caravan all refuelling on site to maintain continuous operations.

Renmark Paringa Council Mayor Peter Hunter said the incident highlighted the importance of investing in infrastructure that supports emergency response capability.

“While we never want to see emergencies like this one threaten our communities, we are pleased to see the infrastructure supported by Council being used to help protect our community,” he said.

“I also want to sincerely thank our local firefighters and emergency service personnel for their tireless efforts, professionalism, and commitment in working to control the fires and protect both our community and the Katarapko National Park.”
