Council partnership delivers road improvements and supports financial sustainability

Published 10th June 2026

A partnership between Renmark Paringa Council and the State Government is set to improve the condition of an important regional road while generating an additional income stream for Council.

Renmark Paringa Council has formally executed an agreement with the Department for Infrastructure and Transport (DIT) for the ongoing maintenance of a 43km section of Wentworth Road.

The agreement strengthens the partnership between Renmark Paringa Council and the State Government to deliver safe, reliable road infrastructure for the community and regional road users.

Under the arrangement, Council will undertake grading works on the road at least three times each year, helping improve safety, accessibility and road conditions for residents, industry, freight operators and visitors travelling throughout the region.

Renmark Paringa Council Chief Executive Officer Tony Siviour said the agreement was a practical example of Council identifying new opportunities to strengthen long-term financial sustainability while continuing to deliver important infrastructure outcomes.

"A key priority for Council is identifying opportunities to diversify our income and reduce our reliance on rates alone," Mr Siviour said.

"Partnerships like this allow us to generate additional revenue while delivering tangible benefits for our community.

“It’s a practical arrangement that supports improved road maintenance outcomes while also contributing to Council’s broader financial sustainability objectives.”

Mr Siviour said Wentworth Road was a strategically important link that supports local residents, primary industries, freight operators, environmental tourism and visitors travelling throughout the region.

"Wentworth Road is a well-used route and maintaining it to a high standard is important for both safety and accessibility," he said.

"By partnering with DIT, we're able to improve the maintenance standard of the road while ensuring Council receives a financial return for the work undertaken."

The agreement has also created opportunities for local businesses, with Council engaging contractors including Stoney Pinch Earthmoving and Altitude Earthworks to undertake elements of the maintenance program.

“We’re fortunate to have skilled and reliable local contractors that Council can partner with to deliver important infrastructure works across the district,” Mr Siviour said.

“This agreement not only improves the road network but also supports local jobs and keeps economic benefit flowing within our region.”

Maintenance works are already underway, with Council staff receiving strong positive feedback from road users on the condition of the route and the improvements delivered to date.

“The early response highlights the value of the partnership in delivering immediate benefits for the community while supporting Council's commitment to maintaining safe and reliable transport infrastructure,” Mr Siviour said.

“We look forward to sharing more about this important project as the works progress.”
