Help us shape a more disability-inclusive Riverland

Published 28th October 2025

The Riverland community is invited to help shape a new regional plan aimed at improving access and inclusion for people with disability.

The councils of Berri Barmera, Loxton Waikerie and Renmark Paringa are creating a joint Disability Access and Inclusion Plan (DAIP) 2026-2030 to create fairer, more inclusive and accessible communities.

Berri Barmera Council Mayor Ella Winnall said the plan will contain shared actions for all three councils.

“This is about listening to our community and understanding priorities for those living with disability .

“We really want to hear from those in our community to ensure this plan is guided by lived experience.”

Renmark Paringa Council Mayor Peter Hunter said it was important that the plan reflects that disability can mean different things to different people.

“This is a chance for people to tell us what inclusion looks like to them,” he said.

“Whether it’s easier access to facilities, better communication or more inclusive events, we want to hear it.”

Community input will guide the first stage of consultation, helping to shape the plan’s direction.

A draft version will then be shared for further community feedback to ensure it represents the Riverland’s needs.

The first stage of public consultation begins today and will finish on Monday 24 November, 2025.

District Council of Loxton Waikerie Mayor Trevor Norton welcomed the regional approach to creating the plan.

“By working together as Riverland councils, we can deliver more consistent and inclusive outcomes across the region,” he said.

“We know that many people with disability in the Riverland often have to travel to neighbouring towns to access services, which is why this regional-approach makes sense.

“Through this regional approach, we hope to build a stronger, more connected Riverland.”
