In loving memory of Alan Coulter

Published 14th October 2025

It is with great sadness that we remember and honour the life of Alan Coulter, who passed away recently.

Renmark Paringa Council was proud to name the then Renmark Recreation Centre as the Alan Coulter Recreation Centre in 2016 as an acknowledgement to Alan’s dedication to the centre and Renmark community for almost four decades.

Alan was named our Citizen of the Year in 2024 to acknowledge his significant contribution to our community.

He was also awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for service to community sport.

Alan’s journey in Renmark began in 1976, when he and his wife Lois made this community their home.

Alan devoted himself tirelessly to helping others through rehabilitation, injury prevention, fitness, coaching, teaching, and mentoring.

Alan’s work transformed countless lives. From aiding those recovering from sports injuries, vehicle accidents, and falls, to helping people manage chronic conditions, Alan’s knowledge and compassion were a beacon of hope.

His dedication to improving the health and wellbeing of Renmark’s people was unparalleled.

He was more than a health professional, Alan was also a cornerstone of the local sporting community.

For over 45 years, he generously supported the Renmark Rovers Football Club, the Renmark Netball Club, the Rowing and Swimming Clubs, and numerous schools, improving fitness and reducing injuries, and fostering a spirit of determination and teamwork.

Alan’s passion extended to the development of the Renmark Recreation Centre, a facility he helped grow into an important hub that it is today.

When the centre was renamed the Alan Coulter Recreation Centre in 2016, Alan told the Murray Pioneer how special the gesture was.

“I feel very humbled, but very honoured. It surprised the hell out of me.”

He always credited the success of the centre to his family and colleagues, noting how his son Garth and daughter Laura “grew up” at the centre and played a major role in its success, alongside his wife Lois, who managed the swim school and reception.

Alan also spoke warmly of the support from the community and council, saying, “We have a council that is very progressive and without them going along with some of my crazy ideas then it wouldn’t be like this.”

His visionary spirit and collaborative approach were key to the centre’s growth and ongoing legacy.

Alan loved what he did and loved helping people achieve their goals. He said, “I really enjoy working with sporting groups and individuals who want to achieve a goal. If you want to achieve a goal I’m here to make sure you do it.”

This unwavering support and dedication is how we will always remember him.

As we say goodbye to Alan, we honour a man whose life was defined by service, kindness, and a deep love for his community.

Rest in peace, Alan Coulter. Thank you for everything.
