Published 24th June 2022
"Public health is what we do collectively as society to create conditions and environments that enable health and wellbeing." (2019-24 State Public Health Plan)

Councils are established as a local public health authority under Section 37 of the South Australian Public Health Act 2011 (the Act). As a public health authority councils are responsible for taking action to preserve, protect and promote public health within their jurisdictions. This includes, but is not limited to: to have adequate measures in place to ensure (as far as reasonably practicable) that activities do not adversely affect public health. identify risks to public health. respond to public health impacts (or potential public health impacts). Section 51 (1) of the Act states the following: "A council or, if the Minister so determines or approves, a group of councils, must prepare and maintain a plan for the purposes of the operations of the council or councils under this Act (a regional public health plan)". In accordance with the above clause, the constituent councils of the Murraylands and Riverland Local Government Association work collectively to maintain a regional public health plan. Section 51 (19) of the Act stipulates that a regional public health plan must be reviewed at least once every 5 years. The 2022-26 Murraylands and Riverland Public Health and Wellbeing Plan is now the second iteration of the Plan and was subject to a review process that included releasing the draft Plan to public consultation from 12 April to 10 May 2021. Having consider the feedback from the 36 submissions received through public consultation, and input from the Office of the South Australian Chief Public Health Officer, the Plan is now operational and can be accessed via the link below.
