What is the duration of the trial?
Is this trial being funded by ratepayers?
No, the trial is funded through the South Australian Governments Future Mobility Lab Fund with in-kind support from key partners such as Sage Automation and Flinders University.
Why did the trial take so long to begin?
Safety of the community is of the highest concern for this trial. Rigorous vehicle testing and training of chaperones was undertaken to ensure safety which took time given the complex environment.

Who can use the bus?

Can I take a ride in my wheelchair?
Yes you can. The shuttle has an automatic ramp to assist with boarding. When booking a ride please indicate that you will need room for your wheelchair and ask for assistance from the safety chaperone.
Where will the bus be going?
Where will the bus be stored at night?
The bus will be securely stored close to the route, this is where it will also be charged overnight.
Why is there no signage to explain the trial / the bus/ changed pedestrian and road conditions?
There are signs installed along the route to advise the community when they are within the driverless bus trial zone.
How many passengers can the bus carry?
The bus can carry 6 passengers with seatbelts for passenger safety
About the Vehicle
Why is the bus driving slowly?
Currently the EasyMile technology is safe to operate at a maximum speed of 20km/hr.
What does the bus run on?
The shuttle is battery powered and is therefore an electric vehicle
Are there cameras on board?
Yes, there is one internal and two external cameras to ensure safety of passengers and the vehicle.
How does the vehicle work?
The shuttle follows a pre-recorded route, similar to virtual tram tracks, which has been happening over the past weeks. The shuttle relies on the fusion of several sensors (localisation lasers, GPS, odometer and cameras) to navigate and localise itself while traveling the route.
Why is there a driver on the bus if it is driverless?
The safety operator is to welcome passengers, explain how the vehicle and technology operates and take control only if required.
What happens if there is an obstacle in front of the vehicle?
To maximise safety and obstacle detection, various sensors and detection lasers have been installed around the vehicle. They allow the shuttle to see and detect obstacles over 50 meters around it. Depending on the speed of the vehicle and its distance to the obstacle, the sensors slow down or stop the vehicle.
Are there already shuttles in operation?
EasyMile has numerous projects around the world, including another trial in South Australia at Munno Para.
Will it stop at a pedestrian crossing if kids are waiting to cross?
The vehicle will stop at all pedestrian crossings.
Will it stop at a red traffic light?
The vehicle will stop at red traffic lights.
Who is liable if there is an accident?
This will be determined by the situation under normal SA road law.
Is there an emergency button on board?
Yes, the vehicle has emergency buttons on board.
Is there a ramp for wheelchairs/prams?
Yes there is an in-built access ramp and the bus is wheelchair accessible.
Can it hit someone/something?
No, the system has a safety net to ensure it does not hit objects.

Can someone hack into the system?
No, the system is secured and uses state of the art encryption
Does the shuttle have seatbelts? Is it required to by legislation?
The vehicle has seatbelts which is a requirement by DPTI under the terms of approval for this trial.
Can young children ride on the bus?
Passengers under the age of 12 months are not permitted on the vehicle. Between 12 months and 4 years old, they must be accompanied by a parent, guardian or supervisor and restrained in a stroller, pram or capsule which is secured in a rearward positon.
Passengers over the age of 4 but less than 7, the child must be seated in rearward facing seat with their seatbelt secure
Custom Built Smart Traffic Control Signal
Why has a smart traffic control signal been installed?
DPTI determined that the smart traffic control signal was needed to ensure the safety of shuttle crossing the dual-carriageway on Ral Ral Avenue.
How does the signal work?
It operates using a geo-fenced connection with the vehicle, such that when the bus enters the geo-fenced area the smart traffic control signals operate providing an amber and then a red signal, stopping the traffic on Ral Ral Avenue.
Will it affect drivers when the shuttle is not in the vicinity?
No, the signal will only be in operation when the shuttle is wanting to cross the intersection, reducing the impact on traffic movement at the intersection.
How long will the signal be there for?
The signals are removable, and will only be at the intersection for the duration of the trial.
What happens if the signal does not work?
If the signal does not work, the safety operator will ensure the shuttle is safe to cross the intersection.
If required, traffic controllers will be at the intersection while the issue with the signal is being rectified.
